What We Do

Camara operates as a social enterprise and operates in two distinct business lines: ‘Education Delivery’ and ‘Computer Reuse’. The connection between these two, seemingly disparate activities is TECHNOLOGY.

  • We take in retired computers from Irish companies and individuals, wipe their hard drives of data (in line with US Department of Defense standards), refurbish and load them with educational software before setting them up as Learning Centres in schools in Ireland, Jamaica and Africa.
  • We train teachers to use these computers as tools to improve the delivery of education to their students.
  • We produce computer training and educational multimedia materials for use by teachers and children.

Where We Work

We work in six African countries – Zambia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Lesotho, and Uganda and have set up local Technology Hubs that act as partners in delivering the Camara educational model directly to schools. Camara’s European Centre is in Chapelizod Industrial Estate, Dublin and our African Service Centre is in Mombasa, Kenya.

What We Believe

Camara is a West African word that means “one who teaches with experience.” When Camara was established in 2005, we were driven by two core beliefs:

1)    Education is the key for people to break the cycle of poverty they find themselves in;

2)    Properly used, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be harnessed to revolutionize the way world class education is delivered to disadvantaged communities.

 Volunteering & Internships

Finding it hard to break into your chosen work sector? Here at Camara we might not be able to offer you a job but we can offer you the next best thing, EXPERIENCE and hopefully that stepping stone into employment.

Camara offers internships and volunteering opportunities for graduates and undergraduates who are interested in and committed to development work. We are always on the look out for motivated and enthusiastic volunteers to support us in a wide range of areas, including Business Development, Sales, Media and Communications, Events Management amongst others.

As much as possible, we try to keep our internships flexible so there is plenty of room to tailor activities to align with your interests, abilities and time commitments. Once you begin your internship, a workplan will be developed collaboratively between you and your assigned Camara supervisor, so you have clear goals and objectives throughout your placement.

Camara is a not for profit, volunteer driven organisation, we rely on Volunteers almost completely and Camara could not function without people giving their time.

So, whether you’re looking for a work experience placement, an internship or just want to offer a few hours of your time to a good cause there are many possibilities!

To apply for any of the positions send a CV and short cover letter detailing your time commitments to: volunteer@camara.ie
