Energy & Utilities

Ireland's energy and utilities sector consists of the oil, coal, renewable energies, gas and petroleum, water and waste management industries. All of these industries require highly technical graduates. The oil industry in particular employs specialists in exploration, drilling and transport as well as requiring significant numbers of graduates for support roles in sales and marketing, human resources, accountancy and information technology.

The industry itself is huge, thus it is broken down into specialist sectors. Oil and gas, water and waste management would be the biggest of these industries with the coal and renewable energy industries being much smaller.

Some of the careers open to graduates in the energy industry are:

  • Ecologists
  • Energy conservation officers
  • Engineering geologists
  • Environmental consultants
  • Geophysicist/field seismologist
  • Hydrogeologists
  • Operational engineers
  • Research scientists
  • Waste management officers

However working in this sector is not for everybody, positions will most likely require relocation to remote areas and working long hours is common. Some roles can also be dangerous by nature and as a result the industry places huge emphasis on health and safety.
